Terranea is Calling

These days we find ourselves reminiscing about a time not long ago, when it was easy to visit our favorite places around the city.  Care to indulge in a fantasy outing with us?

Since we live in the Los Angeles area, one of the first spots that come to mind is the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.  Surrounded by natural beauty, this luxurious seaside destination has become a hotspot for visitors and Angelenos alike.

Local tip: You can enjoy Terranea no matter how big your wallet is.  While we dream about staying overnight at Terranea in the future, you can also have a great time on a day trip.

Before you make a visit, remember to check online for current guidelines for guests.  In the past, you could easily find free parking along nearby Palos Verdes Drive or on the main street leading up to the resort's entrance.  There is also a parking lot if you get there early.

Once you arrive and walk toward the main building with Mediterranean inspired architecture, you will notice colorful native and landscaped vegetation along the manicured golf course.  If you appreciate a variety of plants, you are sure to be impressed.

In the main outdoor plaza, you will pass a lovely fountain, as well as a clothing boutique and coffee/ice cream store, which feature high-end resort wear and snacks.

Once you enter the elegantly tiled hotel lobby, you will most likely be greeted by a huge bouquet of flowers on the center table.  Next to reception there is usually an easel with a sign listing the day’s activities, such as nature walks, yoga, cycling and more.

Often live music is performed here, creating an ambience that pairs nicely with the interior design inspired by California’s past.  On the other side of an oversized, inviting fireplace is a full bar, where you always find guests gathered to enjoy a cocktail and mingle.

As you step outside onto the veranda, you can’t miss the big, blue Pacific Ocean on the horizon.  Relaxed outdoor seating is here, as well as food and alcohol service, if you take some time to enjoy the view.  Often there are events held on the grounds surrounding this area, so you will see a lot of activity and enjoy some people-watching, too.

From this vantage point, there are many paths and places to explore.  You could go down to the spa for some self-care, a healthy meal or an indulgent day poolside.

Another walkway will take you through gardens where wild rabbits nibble on grass and scatter under bushes, when a curious human gets too close for comfort.

You can also take a stroll along the scenic cliffs to the west and go down to the rocky shore below.  If you like to take pictures, you could easily spend hours here.

When you venture to the south side of the resort, there are more restaurants, gardens and pools.  On a clear day, you will see a stunning view of the Portuguese Bend cliffs.  The best time to catch them is in the late afternoon, when they are illuminated by soft sunlight.

Before it turns dark, we would recommend grabbing a drink or casual meal at Nelson’s to enjoy its sunset views.  This restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and is perched on a seaside cliff.  When you are dining there, you will be able to hear the crashing waves and breathe in the fresh, salty air.  Save room for dessert... the sky dusk colors will be a special treat.

As the visit comes to an end and we head home, we like to reflect on what we experienced during the day and make plans for our next visit.  There is always something new to see and do.  If you haven’t been to Terranea yet, we encourage you to go soon or put it on your bucket list.

Some parting advice:  When you visit, remember to bring sunscreen and another layer of clothing to throw over your shoulders.  While you are exploring, the time will fly and you don’t want to sunburn or get cold if the weather suddenly changes.   The climate is moderate and cooler on the Palos Verdes peninsula, even when the rest of Los Angeles is hot.

Enjoy!
